BD is one of the largest global medical technology companies in the world and is advancing the world of health™ by improving medical discovery, diagnostics and the delivery of care. BD has operated in Ireland for over 50 years and has four sites across the country in Drogheda, Dun Laoghaire, Enniscorthy and Limerick. To fulfil our Purpose of advancing the world of health™, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (ID&E) are prominent and lived pieces of our culture.

In celebration and recognition of Pride Month 2022, BD sites around the world came together to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. From BD Pride Month 2022 activities hosted by the Out and Proud Employee Network (OPEN) Associate Resource Group to their pronoun inclusive email template, updated Gender Transition Guidelines, and a financial donation to OutRight Action International to help defend and advance human rights for LGBTQ+ people, the collective efforts help support our associates, positively impact communities, and further build a respectful workplace where everyone feels included and can thrive.

Celebration and support of the LGBTQ+ community was easy to see for associates and visitors of BD sites across Ireland. Pride flags were flown throughout the month of June, pedestrian crossings were painted with the Pride colours and associates wore Pride lanyards in recognition. But visibility wasn’t limited to sunlight; as the sun set each day on the BD Drogheda site, the building was lit up with rainbow lights, solidifying our visual celebration of the LGBTQ+ community all month long.

But celebrating Pride goes beyond flying the rainbow flag and decorating BD sites. Across Ireland, BD associates celebrated Pride Month through a number of events, activities, and initiatives which combined celebrations with educational content to help improve awareness and understanding of the LGBTQ+ community.

Educational posters were displayed, and emails were shared with associates on the importance of inclusive language as well as practical ways associates can be allies and support the LGBTQ+ community both within and outside BD. To connect associates to the wider community, BD Drogheda circulated a variety of Pride events including online talks and Pride Bingo hosted by VHI Healthcare as well as a local drop in LGBTQI+ awareness session with the Drogheda LGBTQI+ Support Group. Associates in Limerick were joined by Richard Lynch, PRO of Limerick LGBT Pride, who shared his story and how LGBTQ+ culture contributes to society in Ireland and beyond.

While Pride Month may be over for another year, their Out and Proud Employee Network continues to work towards their mission of embracing and inspiring the LGBTQIA+ community both within and outside BD, all year round. At BD, they are committed to ensuring that all associates have the opportunity to contribute and succeed no matter who they are or where they come from, leveraging everyone’s diverse perspectives to fuel innovation and generate the best ideas possible. Through their Associate Resource Groups, Leadership Development Programs, Conscious Inclusion Training, board engagement, and investing in the communities that we live and work in, they strive to create opportunities for all that set a new standard for the industry.
